DU 'Black Day' Observed
The teachers and students of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday urged the government to bring the responsible persons to book for their involvement in heinous attack on teachers, students and officials of DU on August 23, 2007.
The demand came from a protest rally under the banner 'Student-Teacher's Protest Rally,' held at the altar of the Oporajeyo Bangla on DU campus in the morning.
From August 20 to 23 in 2007, a violent clash between some DU students and members of Bangladesh Army took place centering a football match, where the military members severely beat up the students.  Following the clash, the army arrested four teachers and eight students of the university.
All classes were suspended from 11:30am to 1pm and the staff and students all wore black badges to observe the day.
In his speech at the rally, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon said, "Though we (Parliamentary Committee's members) had identified the culprits but they are yet to bring under book."
"Those attackers are still working as government employees in deferent sectors of the government that is a shame to our nation," he added
Ex VC of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Prof Anawar Hossain said, "Authorities concerned had not followed recommendations submitted by the parliamentary committee for proper investigation of the incident. Students have to face barrier to go aboard because the cases filed against them on that time is yet to be withdrawn."
Meanwhile, a discussion was also organised as a part of the day, which took place at the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) around 11:30am. Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, DU VC, addressed the event as the chief guest.
