Bangladesh is aspirant for the position of chairmanship Global Forum on Migration and Develop-ment (GFMD), currently being held by Turkey.
The tenure of Turkey to steer Migration Forum also GFMD's ends in December next.
Bangladesh has expressed its desire to head the Migration Forum for two-years, Mustafizur Rahman, Director General of United Nations Wing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday at a media workshop organised by Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Migration Forum is a recent initiative of the United Nations Member States, a platform that enables countries to discuss and follow a cooperative approach in efficient migration management. The platform intensified engagement in the area of migration governance and strengthens the positive impact of migration on development, both in countries of origin and of destination.
The Migration Forum envisages addressing the growing importance of the linkages between migration and development. It reflects the progressive acknowledgement of the limits of a strictly national approach to migration questions and implications at a global level in an inter-governmental framework.
Eighth Meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development will be held on 14-16 October 2015, Istanbul, Turkey.
Turkey took the Chairmanship of the Migration Forum since July 1, 2014 from the Sweden, for a period of 18 months, until December 2015.
Rahman is confident that Bangladesh will be elected to chair the Migration Forum.
