CHITTAGONG, Aug 14: The Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has signed three memorandum of understandings (MoU) with three Chinese enterprises for a single project of 21 km long expressway from Shah Amanat International Airport to Lalkhan Bazar at a cost of Tk 2500 crore (25 billion).
The enterprises are the China Railway Construction International Corporation, the China National Arrow Technology International Engineering Corporation and the China National Arrow Technology Import and Export Corporation. The MoU were signed on August 11, November 23 and November 11 respectively, said officials at the CDA.
The project is expected to be completed by three years next.
The tender process for construction of the expressway has already been completed and it has already been sent to the Ministry of Works for approval.
The Chittagong Port Authority and the Chinese government will finance the project while the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) will implement it.
Apart from this project Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the construction works of another 5.2 km long flyover to connect Muradpur with Lalkhan Bazar on November 12 last year.
An agreement for construction of the Muradpur - Lalkhan Bazar flyover costing Tk 5.55 billion has been signed between the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and the appointed contractor Max-Rankin JV on October 28 last year.
The flyover has been named after former Awami League leader Late Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu. The construction of the four-lane flyover is scheduled to be constructed by 2016.
Besides, two more flyovers at Bahaderhat and Dewanhat areas have already been constructed at a cost of taka 1.5 billion giving the port city a new look.
Meanwhile the construction of Tk 588 million Kadamtali flyover is going on in full swing.
The traffic jam of the port city is expected to be eased remarkably with the construction of those flyovers. The most important intersections points of the city of five million people have been selected for construction of the flyovers.
