Rashid Karim?s 90th birth anniversary today

Today (August 14) marks the 90th birth anniversary of celebrated novelist Rashid Karim.
Rashid Karm was born in Kolkata in 1925. He did his BA from the Calcutta Islamia College. After the partition of the sub-continent in 1947, his family moved to Dhaka. He began writing during the British period, continued during the Pakistan period but wrote his major novels during the Bangladesh period.
Poet Professor Muhammad Samad said, "Karim was very affable. He created a unique literary style. His first novel 'Uttam Purush' won Adamjee Award. The novel's language is quite straightforward and interesting. I believe that Karim was one of the finest writers in our country."
The writer penned his first story at the age of fourteen. But his first story was published in 1942. After that he did not write till 1961, when began the second phase of his writing career. His first novel "Uttam Purush" was published that year. Two years later "Prashanna Pashan" instantly turned him into a major novelist of the Bangla language.
About the prolific writer, noted publisher Syed Zakir Hossain (CEO of Adorn Publication) said, "He was very confident about his writing. He wrote what he believed in. He taught us about the ecstasy of obtaining knowledge and passion."
Columnist and literary critic Sinha MA Sayeed said, "Karim was an introvert. He was one of those who meticulously handled content and different forms of novels. Many of his works have become classics for their literary and sociological value. He was very close to the late poet Shamsur Rahman."
After the Liberation War, he published his epic novel, "Amar Jato Glani", in 1973. Till this period he was known as a gifted writer who wrote less but wrote very well. But from then on he wrote and published regularly. "Prem Ekti Lal Golap" was published in 1978.
Some of Karim's notable works include "Uttam Purush", "Prashanno Pashan", "Amar Joto Glani" "Prem Ekti Lal Golap", "Shadharan Lok-er Kahini", "Ekaler Roopkotha", "Shonar Pathor Bati", "Mayer Kachhe Jachchi", "Chini Na" and "Boroi Nishongo".
For his outstanding contribution to Bangla literature, Karim received the Adamjee Award, Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak, Lekhika Sangha Award and many other prestigious awards.
