By-elections to 30 women's reserved seats in 29 Upazila Parishads where at least two candidates polled same number of votes will be held on Wednesday. "The polls to the reserved seats will be held from 8am to 2pm," said EC assistant secretary Ashfakur Rahman on Tuesday. Besides, by-polls to 17 vacant reserved seats in 12 Upazila Parishads for which no nominations were filed will be held on August 25, Rahman added. Earlier on June 15, the Election Commission arranged the maiden polls to the reserved seats of more than 450 Upazila Parishads out of 487 across the country. An Upazila Parishad comprises one chairman, two vice-chairmen (one of the posts reserved for a woman), chairmen of all union parishads and mayors of municipalities under the upazila and women members elected to reserved seats. The chairmen and vice-chairmen are elected in direct balloting, but not the women members in the reserved seats. The women members of an upazila parishad are elected from the votes of the women members of the reserved seats of union parishads and municipalities. ?UNB
