Ex-president known as father of Indian missile program dies

Shillong : Indian former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam died on Monday after collapsing during a lecture in Shillong, PTI reported.

Kalam collapsed during a speech at the IIM Shillong and was rushed to the nearby Bethany Hospital where doctors put him on oxygen and tried to revive him.


The president from 2002 until 2007 was known as the father of the country's military missile program.

B. Warjri, chief secretary of Meghalaya state, said Kalam died Monday evening at a hospital. He was 84.

Kalam fell sick Monday while addressing the students of the Indian Institute of Management in the Meghalaya city of Shillong.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of former Indian president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury tonight expressed her deep shock at the death of former Indian president.deputy speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad M Fazle Rabbi Miah, Opposition Leader in Parliament Begum Rowshan Ershad and Chief Whip ASM Firoj also expressed their deep shock.
