RAJSHAHI, July 6: Teachers, students and officials of Rajshahi University (RU) on Monday celebrated its 62nd founding anniversary amid fanfare and great enthusiasm promising to establish the historic institution as a model university for the world.
RU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin inaugurated the anniversary programmes in the morning in front of the administrative building by hoisting the national flag along with university flag and releasing pigeons.
Later, a colourful procession with banners and festoons was brought out on the campus.
Speakers at a discussion afterwards at the senate building promised to establish a violence-free campus that would also be a model for the whole world.
The RU VC sought cooperation from the teachers, students and staff to run the university's research and academic activities smoothly for a better future of the students and the nation as a whole.
He also recalled the sacrifice of Prof Shamsuzzoha for the democratic movement of Bangladesh, who was shot dead in 1969 by oppressive rulers of the then undivided Pakistan.
Among others, RU pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin, Registrar Prof Entajul Haque, Student Adviser Prof Sadequl Arefin Matin and Public Relation Administrator Prof Elias Hossain addressed the discussion.
RU started journey on July 6, 1953 with six departments under three faculties with only 161 students and 68 teachers with Prof Itrat Hossain Zuberi as the founder VC.
Now it has about 33,000 students and 1,200 teachers with 50 departments under eight faculties, five research institutes and 17 residential halls.
