300 marooned as embankment in Khulna collapses

Khulna, July 5: At least 300 people have been marooned at Nalian village in the Dakope upazila of the district as 150-metre of a flood control embankment on Shibsha river collapsed on Sunday noon due to strong current in the river.
Chairman of Sutarkhali Union Parishad Gazi Ashraf Hossain said when erosion by the Shibsha river took a serious turn few months back some cracks were seen at this point of the embankment.
However, Water Development Board authorities didn't take proper steps to protect the embankment although they were informed of the matter several times, the chairman added.
Meanwhile, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Piyus Kundu said a project proposal was sent to the higher authorities to construct a dam on the opposite side of the collapsed embankment.     ?UNB
