Export of wooden furniture from Bangladesh has witnessed a robust growth over the last several years.
Increase in interest of international buyers in wooden furniture has boosted exports of the item seven times in the last five years.
Relevant sources said Bangladesh's main exportable is the readymade garments (RMG). But too much dependence on a single sector is not a good sign. The export basket includes 107 items. The RMG sector constitutes 85 per cent of total exports. Other 106 items share only 15 per cent.
Good quality, quantity and new design of the furniture items hold out demand worldwide. Bangladeshi furniture is going to more than 20 countries. These include India, US, UK, Australia, Canada, UAE and Germany.
Businessmen said they use new map, new design, teak and quality timbre to make furniture. Companies that export furniture include Akhter, Brothers, Partex, Navana, Otobi etc. Knowledgeable and experienced crafters make furniture in Bangladesh.
K M Akhtaruzzaman, President of the Bangladesh Furniture Exporters  Samity told the Daily Observer, "We are creating new market worldwide with good quality, quantity and new design. The number of wooden furniture workers is near about 30 lakh.
Salim H Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Furniture Shilpo Malik Samity, told the Daily Observer, educated and experienced workers have good demand in the furniture industry sector.
"These workers are making suitable furniture in our country. The furniture items also hold out good demand in local market and we are going to international markets. Today or tomorrow, we will lead in international market.
According to sources in the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), export of Bangladeshi wooden furniture fetched Tk 61.16 crore in the fiscal year 2008-09. In the next fiscal year it rose to Tk 133.24 crore. Furniture exports increased to Tk 333.06 crore in the fiscal year in 2012-13 and in the next year it was at Tk330.93 crore.
Political unrest in the recent months has slowed down export of furniture. In May of the outgoing fiscal year of 2014-15 furniture export stood at Tk 388.30 crore.
