Mukul is now in jail in a case filed by his wife Naznin Akhter Tonni, a senior journalist of daily Janakantha.
Earlier on June 27, a Dhaka court has granted one-day remand of Mukul, who was arrested for ‘torturing’ his wife.
Mirpur Police Station Sub-inspector Masud Parvez said during interrogation Mukul admitted the matter of torturing his wife.
He said the police produced him before the court on Saturday and pleaded for a seven-day remand in the case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey rejected Mukul's bail plea and granted police a day to quiz him.
On Friday, Tonni filed the case against Mukul with the Mirpur Police Station.
Mukul was arrested at Shegunbagicha in the capital while he was on his way home from work on Friday midnight, the SI said.
In September 2013, Tonni jumped off the fourth floor of her residence on the news that her minor daughter Chandramukhi had died.
According to the case details, Tonni claimed Mukul developed a relationship with a woman named Meherun Binte Ferdous Sithi, an English medium school teacher, when she was undergoing treatment at the hospital for several months after their 1st daughter Chandramukhi’s demise.
Mukul had been torturing her following his extra-marital relationship with the woman, she alleged.
She also accused Mukul of misappropriating money by selling off the plot they got as journalists in Purbachal without her consent.
The couple have a six-month old daughter named Ayra.
