Acid Violence
Only 300 cases disposed in 13 years, 1100 cases under trial

Despite around 2,500 incidents of acid violence took place in Bangladesh during last 13 years from 2002 to 2014, only 1,400 cases were filed at that period.
Of the cases, around 1,100 cases are still under trial at separate tribunals across the country while only 300 cases were disposed, according to the information of the National Acid Control Council (NACC).
The information was disclosed at the 27th meeting of the NACC held on Tuesday in the Home Ministry conference room at Secretariat. State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, also chairman of the council, chaired the meeting.
According to the statement of the NACC, only 13 persons were convicted to capital punishment in similar number of cases during last 13 years. A total of 116 persons were convicted to lifetime imprisonment and 177 persons were awarded other convictions.
Though the meeting asked the authorities concerned to accelerate the pace of disposal of the acid related cases expressing its dissatisfaction, it also claimed that the numbers acid violence declined now-a-days.
After the meeting, the State Minister said now acid violence has almost come down to zero level as people are these days more aware in this regard. In 2002, some 499 incidents of acid violence took place. But in 2015, only 18 incidents have so far been reported.
He said a total of 1,181 cases related to acid violence are now under trial in courts. The authorities concerned were instructed to take steps to dispose the cases soon.
Mentioning that there are 13 condemned convicts in acid violence cases in the country's jails, the State Minister said, "We're taking steps for the early execution of the verdicts."
According to the data of Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF), around 2,484 incidents of acid violence were reported during the 13 years while the numbers of survivors were around 2,823.
In last five months of this year, a total of 30 persons have been become the acid violence victim in 18 incidents.
Of them, 8 persons were victimised of acid violence in 4 incidents in January, 5 persons in 3 incidents in February, 4 persons in 4 incidents in March, 8 persons in 3 incidents in April and 5 persons in 4 incidents in May.
