The government has taken precautionary steps to avert accidents on waterways during Eid-ul-Fitr as incidents of capsize have a common phenomenon during the
eid rush.
"No launch will be allowed to take excess passengers and goods during the Eid rush. Water vessels must set out for their destinations before crossing their load level. There'll be full-time monitoring teams led by BIWTA at launch ghats so that no launch can start its journey with overloading," Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan said on Sunday.
The minister said this while talking to reporters after a meeting held at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) office in the city on safety on waterways during the eid vacation.
He said no water vessel would be able to take passengers midway from any boat making any undue halt.
Shahjahan Khan warned that water vessels will not be allowed charge extra fare from passengers, while fishermen will remain from using fishing nets in the river to fish for the smooth movement of water vessels.    ?UNB
