World No Tobacco Day observed
57,000 die, 4 lakh become disabled every year for tobacco

The World No Tobacco Day was observed throughout the country as elsewhere in the globe on Sunday. This year the theme of the day is "Stop illicit trade of tobacco products".
MEHERPUR: Marking the day, the District Task Force and Anti-Tobacco Alliance jointly brought out a rally and formed a human chain in front of the deputy commissioner's (DC) office here.
President of the Task Force Committee and DC Mahmud Hossain led the rally. Later, a discussion meeting was organised at the conference room of DC's office. DC Mahmud Hossain chaired the meeting.
It was administered by Abdus Salam and EPI Superintendent Kazi Rowson Nahar, while Senior Health Education Officer of Civil Surgeon's (CS) office gave the welcome address.
Among others, CS Dr. Azizur Rahman Siddiqui, Additional Police Super Ahmaruzzaman, Chief Advisor of District Anti-Tobacco Alliance Rafiqul Alam, President of District NGO Forum Mosharraf Hossain, and Executive Director of Subah Samajik Unnayan Sangstha Moin-ul-Alam, spoke on the occasion.
Speakers at the meeting said around 57,000 people die and nearly 4 lakh people become disabled every year in the country due to tobacco-related diseases.
They urged authorities concerned to raise tax on tobacco so that its widespread use could be curbed. They also demanded pictorial message on the packets of cigarettes.
A large number of people from different strata attended the meeting.
DINAJPUR: To mark the day, a rally was brought out in the district town on Sunday. The District Task Force Committee, Tobacco Control Coalition, Confederation for Tobacco Control, Consortium for Smoke Free Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisions, ACD, Anti-Tobacco Media Confederation (Soul), and Development Council including local NGOs jointly arranged the rally.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dinajpur Ahmad Shamim Al Razi led the rally as chief guest, while Police Super Md Ruhul Amin, Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Sultan Md Shamsuzzaman, and Senior Information Officer Abul Kalam Md Shamsuddin, were special guests.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at the conference room of Sadar Hospital. Acting CS Dr Md Ohidul Haque presided over the meeting while Senior Health Education Officer of CS's office Md Saiful Islam delivered the welcome speech. Executive Director of Development Council Md Hafizur Rahman and representatives of different NGOs also addressed the meeting.
NARAIL: To mark the day, the district health department brought out a rally from Narail Sadar Hospital premises on Sunday, and after parading the town roads, the rally ended at the civil surgeon's office premises.
Later, a meeting was held at the conference hall of CS's office. Dr. Subrata Kumar Saha, CS of Narail, chaired the meeting.
Among others, Dr. Sanjit Kumar Saha, upazila health and family planning officer, Dr. Abdul Kader Jasim, different NGO representatives and also people from different corners of the society, attended the meeting.
RANGAMATI: Marking the day, a discussion meeting   was held at the civil surgeon's (CS) office here. The district health department arranged the meeting on Sunday morning.
CS of Rangamati Dr. Snaho Kanti Chakma chaired the meeting while Additional Deputy Magistrate (ADM) Saif Uddin Ahamed was chief guest. Among others, Assistant Police Super Rezaul Karim, Deputy Director of Islamic Foundation here Alamgir Shikder, and Dr Binod Shekhar Chakma, also addressed the meeting.
Regarding the day, a rally was also held in Rangamati town. CS Dr. Snaho Kanti Chakma led the rally, while ADM Saif Uddin Ahamed, government officials, doctors and others took part in the rally. Rangamati District Health Department arranged the rally.
