Mohammedan Sporting Club and Dhaka Abahani, the two local football archrivals of Dhaka city will engage in a match of dignity today (Wednesday) in Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League-2014-15 at 4:45 pm at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Channel-9 will telecast the match live.
At earlier times, football crazes would gather at the stadium in large numbers, especially during Mohammedan-Abahani matches. It was common that the fans would brawl before and engaged in clash after the match. So, these matches used to bring excitement among the die-hard fans. As the sources of entertainment were limited at the time, the whole city would eagerly wait for the Dhaka Derby matches and take pleasures from these.
Although, most of the football matches in Dhaka are played at the almost empty stadium nowadays, galleries used to find its glory back during the matches between the two traditional rivals of Dhaka.
None of the two teams are on the top place on the point table, but both are placed one after another. Playing nine matches so far, both the teams celebrated same five wins, drew in two matches and lost two matches. With 12 goals difference, Mohammedan on the third place while Abahani are placed fourth with eight goals differences.
In last premier league, the two counterparts meet three times where Abahani won by 1-0 margin in the first meet. Though Mohammedan took revenge of the defeat after beating the opponents by the same margin in the second meet, Abahani blanked Mohammedan by the same margin in the third meet again.
If someone wants to count on the strength of the two rivals, they will found Dhaka Abahani got a good defence and midfield with a weak striking department which suffered a team a lot. Apart from striker Wahed scored a brace to beat Sk Jamal, Abahani could not play that well as expected. Though Shahed, Komol and Imran were giving their best but could not score.
Former Bangladesh coach and now the Abahani coach George Kotan from Austria trained his disciples on the Tiki Taka football style earlier, which was not worked for the traditional Sky-blues.
On the other hand, Mohammedan who were assembled a comparative young force were playing well in the league. Guinean striker Ismael Bangoura of the Black and White jerseys is in-form after scoring eight goals the second highest goals of the league. Beside, their Tawhidul scored four goals.
