The investigation into the murder of Faruk Ahmed, a Freedom Fighter and leader of Tangail Unit of the ruling Awami League, has made no headway although two and half years have elapsed.
Faruk's bullet-riddled body had been recovered from near his house in College Para in Tangail on January 18 in 2013.
Sources told the Daily Observer that the investigators of the murder case are trying to implicate local ruling party leaders in the murder of Faruk Ahmed.
Investigators are trying to implicate the nephew of Shamsur Rahman Khan Shajahan, a former president of Tangail District Unit of the AL and organiser of the War of Liberation.  Shajahan was a former joint secretary of AL Central Working Committee and Education and Cultural Affairs Secretary of the party.
Moreover, Amanur Rahman Khan (Rana),  Member of Parliament (MP) from Tangail-3 (Ghatail) his brother Mayor of Tangail Municipality, Shahidur Rahman Khan (Mukti), other brothers Zahidur Rahman Khan (Kakan), President of Tangail Chamber of Commerce and Saniyat Khan (Bappa), Vice President of Chhatra League Central Committee have also gone into hiding fearing arrest.
The influential Khan family of Tangail controls AL politics in the region after independence of Bangladesh, the sources said.
Since the Khan bothers including the MP went into hiding another group not affiliated with the ruling party, Chhota Moni, a returnee from Germany, and Shohil Khan, former commissioner, took control of politics in Tangail. The district police authority allegedly helped them take over the control. They are now engaged in tender manipulations and control other crime syndicates.
A group of people who identify themselves as members of the ruling party district unit also assaulted the Acting President of District AL, Alamgir Khan Minu, recently.
The local administration was also harassing several top local leaders of the ruling party in connection with Faruk Ahmed murder.  Police arrested two persons, Anisul Islam (Raja) and Mohammed Ali, a local Jubo League activist, in connection with the murder. Investigators also managed to record confessional statements from them allegedly under duress.
Abdul Kader Bapan, organizing secretary of district Chhatra League, who was injured during a hartal called in protest against the murder of Faruk Ahmed, succumbed to his injuries at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. Bapan was critically injured in clashes between supporters of hartal and anti-hartal groups.
Police also failed to arrest the killers of Bapan. Sources alleged that the killers of Bapan were helped by the local influential leaders to flee.
According to investigation sources the place of occurrence (PO) of Faruk murder was shown as MP Rana's Training Centre. The centre was used for re-charging batteries of vehicles at night where no incident of murder occurred on that night, sources confirmed.
A district level influential leader of the ruling party told this correspondent, a vested group of opposition including BNP-Jammat activists are trying to control local AL politics.  A high official of the district police was involved in this mission, the sources alleged.
Mamunur Rashid, a district level AL leader wrote to the Home Ministry to save the Khan family from the conspiracy.  Faruk Hossain Manik, General Secretary Tangail District Jubo League, MA Rouf, General Secretary Tangail Red Crescent Society, Farid Ahmed, AL leader of Tangail Municipality Unit, Rezaur Rahman Chancal, President of District Jubo League were arrested and later released.  The District Awami League leaders urged the Prime Minster and the Home Minster to order proper investigation into the murder of Faruk Ahmed.
