Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has threatened to intensify its ongoing anti-government movement if the government fails to hold free, fair and credible city corporation elections.
BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed made the threat at a press briefing at the party's Central Office at Naya Paltan in the capital on Monday.
BNP Standing Committee  member Brig Gen (Retd) Hannan Shah, Advisor to the BNP Chairperson Advocate Ahmed Azom Khan and BNP International Affairs Secretary Dr Assaduzzaman Khan Ripon, were present at the briefing.
The BNP leader alleged, "Government has completed its all preparation to hold a blue-print election like January 5, 2014 as is evident in harassment of the leaders and workers of the BNP-backed candidates by the members of the law enforcing agencies harassing."
He claimed that police had, so far, arrested over hundred leaders and workers, including councillor candidates and polling agents of the BNP-led 20-party alliance supported candidates.
Moreover, the leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League are threatening polling agents of the opposition candidates not go to polling stations today (Tuesday), the BNP leader added.
Moudud Ahmed said, "Hopefully the government will take proper initiative to hold free, fair and credible elections. If it not, we will be forced to intensify our ongoing anti-government movement to restore democracy in the country."
Criticising the Election Commission for its 'dubious' stance on making level playing field for all candidates, the BNP leader said "We have no trust on the EC as the commission is acting according to the directives of the government."
He, however, urged the EC not to give any break in vote counting.
