The construction work of main structure of the much-awaited Padma Multipurpose Bridge will begin in October next, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
"Hammer, weighing 2,500 tonnes, has already been made in Germany for using piling work of Padma Bridge. It will reach Mongla Port on May 15," he told reporters at the conference room of his ministry.
The two-tier Padma Bridge having provisions for movements of vehicles on the upper tier of the bridge and operation of trains in the lower tier would be built with concrete and steel structure. After completion of the 6.15-kilometre bridge, designed to carry a highway and rail line, will connect 19 southern districts with the capital.
Obaidul Quader said necessary equipments, including dredger, for river training have already reached here and technical committee and concerned engineers in this respect is now staying at the Jajira side of the bridge.
Around 43 per cent construction work of approach roads between Jajira and Mawa sides have already been completed, the minister said.
About Dhaka Elevated Expressway construction project, he said rehabilitation plans already been finalized and works is going on in full swing. The main structural work of Dhaka Elevated Expressway will start from June next, the minister said.
Quader also said tender already called for construction work Metrorail Depo and government paid Tk3 billion to RAJUK for 54 acres of land earmarked for Metrorail depot.
Chief Engineer of Roads and Highways M Firoj Iqbal, DTCA Executive Director M Kykobad and all monitoring chiefs of the ministry and the department were present.
