The ruling Awami League (AL) on Tuesday called upon Election Commission (EC) to take appropriate actions against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for her ill-motivated activities that will ruin the prevailing festivity over the city corporation elections in three cities, due on April 28.
AL Publicity Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud made the plea while expressing official reaction to Monday's alleged attack on Khaleda Zia's motorcade during her election campaign at Karwan Bazar, at a press briefing at the party President's political office at Dhanmondi in the city.
Hasan Mahmud said, "Khaleda Zia is sensing that her party will face an inevitable defeat of BNP-backed candidates in the ensuing city corporation polls, so she is creating an anarchic situation through rallies and meetings."
"The Monday's incident was yet another drama of Khaleda Zia like that of a drama she staged keeping herself under confinement at her Gulshan office," Hasan Mahmud, also a former minister, added.
"Khaleda Zia could realise that people of Dhaka City will not cast their votes in favour of her nominated candidates. For this reason, she wants to spoil the persisting festive mood in polls by creating anarchy in the name of polls campaigning," he said.
"We have cautioned the EC earlier about such evil activities of Khaleda Zia. In reality, she wants to fish in the troubled water by creating law and order situation to put a question mark on the city polls," Hasan Mahmud added.
He said, "Khaleda Zia has adopted a new strategy after failing to oust the government through killing people in the name of movement. That's why she wants to foil the city polls by creating law and order in the name of electioneering, because she knows it better that the countrymen were aggrieved for her subversive acts in the last three months of hartal and blockades."
Hasan Mahmud said, "Khaleda Zia went for polls campaigning without apprising police protection, people burst into agitation as soon as she reached Kawran Bazar when the members of her personal security, CSF, opened fire that created indiscipline there."
"Besides, we came to know that apart from the candidate who got BNP's support, many councillor aspirants sought BNP's support for Kawran Bazar area (City ward-26). Those who were deprived of BNP support got agitated. They might be involved in yesterday's incident," he added.
