Expenditures of candidates for mayoral and councilor posts in elections to two city corporations in Dhaka are likely to be over TK100 crore, according to election analysts.
"Candidates having blessings of the ruling Awami League (AL) and the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are  spending a large amount of money for elections," said Ashraf Talukder, a councillor candidate backed by Awami League in Ward 12 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
This correspondent tried to talk to a number of other candidates in both DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). But all declined to make any comment on this issue.
Owner of a printing press in Arambagh area said press owners are earning a good amount of money in this off season due to huge work orders by the candidates. About Tk 20crore to 25 crore were spent on various printing materials for elections by candidates, he said.
The election analysts told this correspondent that the Tk100-crore election expenditure-estimate is worked out on the basis of possible expenses by each of the councilor and mayoral candidates in a total of 124 Wards including 31 reserved ones for women in the DSCC and the DNCC.
However, the Election Commission (EC) has fixed Tk2 per voter expenditure for mayoral candidates and Tk 6 per voter expenditure for councillor candidates.
The number of mayoral candidates in two city corporations is 36 and that of councillor candidates is 865. The election analysts estimate that expenditure of each councillor candidate is Tk10 lakh and mayoral candidate Tk50 lakh each. On the basis of that the total expenditures are estimated to be more than Tk100 crore.
The expenditures are made in a month before the elections, including the campaign period set by the Election Commission (EC). The elections are slated for April 28.
Such expenditures include rough costs of posters, leaflets, stickers, ropes, rent of rickshaws, vehicles including mini-trucks and CNG-run autorickshaws, expenditures for hiring manpower for canvassing and rent of rooms by all candidates. However, the expenditures do not include any 'cash distribution' among voters which is alleged in almost all elections in the country.
A total of 16 candidates are vying for the mayoral post in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), 282 are councillor candidates and 90 are reserved women councillor candidates. The total number of Wards in DNCC is 36 and 12 are reserved for women. There will be a total of 1093 polling centres and 5,892 polling booths in DNCC. Male voters are 12, 24,701 and female voters are 11, 20,673.
There are 20 mayoral candidates in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The number of councilor candidates is 396 and 97 are women councilor candidates. DSCC's total Wards are 57 and 19 are reserved for women.
