The renewal of water transit and trade protocol will figure in Bangladesh-India talks beginning in the capital of the neighbouring country tomorrow.
According to a Shipping Ministry press statement issued on Sunday, Shipping Secretary Shafique Alam Mehedi already left Dhaka for New Delhi to join the three-day secretary level meeting.
Mehedi is leading the 11-member delegation of Bangladesh.
The meeting, third of its kind, will focus on different issues relating to shipping, including the renewal of Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade (PIWTT) between the two countries.
The earlier such meeting was held on February 27-March 2 in 2013.
The timeframe of the present shipping protocol expired on March 31 this year and it was extended up to June 30.
The existing PIWTT was signed between Bangladesh and India for the first time in November, 1972. Later, its effectiveness continued through the renewals.
"The third meeting in Delhi will bring in positive result," Md Shafiqul Haque, director of  Marine Safety and Traffic Management Department of Bangladesh Inland Water and Transport Authority, told the Daily Observer.
