NEW DELHI, Apr 11: The Supreme Court of India has asked all private hospitals across the country to provide free treatment to acid victims, including medicines and expensive reconstruction surgeries.
A social justice bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokurand and Uday U Lalit asked all state governments and Union territories to take up the matter with the private hospitals to ensure that acid attack victims are attended to immediately and adequately.
The court also asked the Medical Council of India to take up the issue of free treatment with private hospitals. On banning off-the-counter sale of acid across the country, the bench asked all states and Union territories to notify acid as a scheduled substance to stop its unregulated sale.
Meanwhile, the Indian government informed the court that 309 cases of acid attacks were registered in the country in 2014 out of which 185 incidents were from Uttar Pradesh.
Madhya Pradesh witnessed the second highest number of cases with 57. No acid attack incident was reported in any Union Territory except Delhi where 27 such cases were registered last year.
The court had last year enhanced compensation payable by state governments to acid attack victims to a uniform Rs 3 lakh from the earlier Rs 50,000.
The court had banned sale of acid to minors and said the corrosive substance could be sold only to those with identity cards issued by the government and who could specify the purpose for the purchase in writing. It had also asked the centre and states to make acid attack offences non-bailable.     ?BSS
