Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin on Saturday said that the decision regarding army deployment during the city corporation elections would be taken after April 19.
“The Election Commission will have a meeting with the law enforcing agencies on April 19. Decision on the army deployment will be taken after the meeting,” said the CEC in an opinion sharing programme with the mayor and councilor candidates in Chittagong City Corporation elections.
Although BNP demanded army deployment in the city corporation elections in both Dhaka and Chittagong, BNP-supported Chittagong Development Movement candidate Monjur Alam remained silent regarding the issue.
But, a number of mayoral and councilor candidates raised the demand in the meeting.
Regarding ballot box snatching, Rakibuddin said, “Snatching of ballot boxes will not be possible at present time. We’ve taken steps to deploy huge law enforcers and asked them to take maximum measures in this regard.”
Election Commissioners Jabed Ali and M Shahnewaz, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner M Abdullah, CMP Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mondol and DC Mezbahuddin were present in the meeting, presided over by EC Secretary Sirajul Islam.
