The Election Commission has sought executive magistrates to operate mobile courts on urgent basis for the purpose of preventing electoral code violations as aspirants of the city polls, slated to be held on April 28, are flouting code of conduct 'on a large scale'.
The commission in a letter on Monday asked the Public Administration Ministry to provide six executive magistrates - two each for the three city corporations - until the nomination withdrawal deadline of April 9. It has already issued show-cause notices against a dozen aspirants seeking their explanations on their alleged breach of code of conduct.
In its letter, the EC also sought 18 executive magistrates - six each for the three city corporations - from Apr 10, the day when the formal campaign commences.
In addition, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has been asked to deploy 33 executive magistrates on four days before and after the elections in Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation.
Of the alleged violation of code of conduct relating to election, most have been reported from the DSCC.
DSCC Returning Officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed said seven possible councillor aspirants were asked on Monday to explicate on why they had not removed their posters and billboards.
On the other hand, three possible mayor candidates had been verbally cautioned, an election officer said
According to relevant law, the returning officer will caution the candidates if their justifications are found dissatisfactory. Possible imprisonment and fines will be considered as punitive measures. Even the EC can annul their candidatures as a last resort.
DNCC Returning Officer Md Shah Alam said they will scrutinise the accusations that several candidates had gone with more than five persons to collect nomination papers.
