SATKHIRA, Mar 24: Over 1500 families were marooned as 15 villages in Shyamnagar upazila of the district were flooded following collapse of an embankment at Madia point on Kholpetua River.
Following collapse of the 200 feet embankment, around 20 hectares of cropland and over 500 shrimp enclosures were washed away due to heavy pressure of water from the river during the high tide, said Nazrul Islam, chairman of Burigoalini union parishad in the upazila, said.
The marooned people are preparing to take shelter on the nearby high lands; if the repair work is not done immediately, the floodwater will inundate the entire upazila, he added.
Abdul Hamid, executive engineer of Satkhira Water Development Board (WDB) said the repairing work of the embankment had been completed on Monday morning. But immediately after the work, it collapsed again.
