BD steps to stop violence against women lauded

Speakers at a discussion in New York, organized by Bangladesh Permanent Mission to UN, called for implementing concerted programmes at the national and international levels to prevent violence against women.
Bangladesh Permanent Mission organized the meeting on Thursday as a 'side event' of the 59th session on United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), said an official release on Friday.
The current session of CSW started on March 9 and will conclude on March 20.
Moderated by Bangladesh Permanent Representative to UN Dr. AK Abdul Momen, the meeting was attended by State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, Zimbabwe Women Affairs Secretary Dr. Parpitua Gambo, Denmark's Deputy Permanent Representative to UN Erick Larsen, UN-Women Asia and Pacific Regional Director Roberto Clark and Plan International Global Consultant Sara Hendrick.
State Minister Meher Afroze Chumki said violence against women is taking place all over the world, which is seriously affecting the victim families and society.
Listing various steps taken by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to stop violence against women, she said laws and policies have been formulated to make the government's initiatives sustainable.
A video documentary was screened at the discussion meeting highlighting programmes undertaken to prevent violence against women in Bangladesh. The speakers appreciated Bangladesh's political determination to stop violence against women and children.    ?BSS
