The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered to submit the appeal summery of the convicted war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami against his death sentence by March 31.
The four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, asked both the state and defence to submit the summery by this time.
The Jamaat leader was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal-1, on October 29, last year.
BDNEWS24 adds, Nizami contested the verdict in the Appellate Division on November 23, seeking acquittal.
The court said, it will wait until March 31 and then proceed with the hearing even if the summaries were not submitted.
The bench had on February 25, given two weeks for the submission, a deadline that expired on Tuesday.
The time plea by Nizami’s lawyers were heard after the matter came up in the cause list.
The state had not also submitted its summary.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and his deputy Khandaker Diliruzzaman stood for the state, while Zainul Abedin Tuhin and Shishir Monir argued for Nizami.
The Jamaat leader was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal-1, chaired by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, on Oct 29, nearly a year after the case was wrapped up.
The three-member special court said in the unanimous verdict that eight of the 16 charges levelled against him had been proven.
The charges included the spearheading the execution of intellectuals, mass killing, rape and loot during the Liberation War.
