The government is considering three options against first secretary of the North Korean Embassy in Dhaka Son Young Nam, including one to ask his government to immediately withdraw him from Bangladesh, for gold smuggling.
The two other options under consideration are the withdrawal of his diplomatic immunity and his prosecution under the country's anti-smuggling laws apart from declaring him persona-non-grata, according to Foreign Ministry sources. The North Korean diplomat (Commercial and Economic Affairs) was caught with 27kg gold worth about Tk 14 core at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Friday night.
The government might give a 72-hour to seven-day ultimatum to withdraw its diplomat as his crime cannot be covered by any provision of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Immunity.
Both Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque are expected to discuss the matter further on Monday and will give the final decision.     ?UNB
