The Awami League led 14-party alliance in Chittagong on Sunday declared the former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury as the 14-Party alliance's candidate for the upcoming City Corporation elections.
Meanwhile, the opposition Jatiya Party (JP) also on Sunday announced its candidates for the upcoming Dhaka City Corporations (DCC) mayoral polls.
In a meeting held with Indu Nandan Dutt in the chair in Chittagong, the leaders of the 14-party alliance announced the name of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury as the Mayor candidate of Chittagong City Corporation.
The meeting has passed a unanimous resolution in this connection to present Mohiuddin Chowdhury as Chittagong Mayoral candidate to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Three-time mayor of the port city, Mohiuddin Chowdhury had lost the 2010 polls to the BNP-supported candidate M Manjur Alam.
The Awami League's City unit General Secretary AZM Nasiruddin and Chittagong Development Authority's Chairman Abdus Salam are also aspirants for the mayoral race.
Amid the Election Commission's plans to hold the polls by June this year, leaders of the ruling alliance sat on Sunday.
Neither Mohiuddin nor Nasiruddin, were present at the meeting.
The proposal will be forwarded to Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
It may be mentioned that the past elections were held on June 17 in 2010. The tenure of the existing Mayor will expire on July.
But as per election rules, the polls should be held before 180 days of the date of expiry.
It may be mentioned that the President of the unit Alhaj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and AJM Nasiruddin, General Secretary of the unit are the aspirants of the nominations in the post.
Jatiya Party (JP) General Secretary of Dhaka city (North) unit Bahauddin Ahmed Babul for DCC North while Presidium Member of JP Saifuddin Ahmed Milon for DCC South as mayoral candidates for the upcoming both Dhaka City Corporations (DCC) mayoral polls.
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad made the announcement while addressing a press briefing after holding a joint meeting with Jatiya Party south and north units of the Dhaka city at his Banani office.
Ershad hopped that Jatiya Party will be able to restore democracy in the country through its victory in the DCCs polls.
Jatiya Party Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and Presidium Member Sayed Abu Hossain Babla, were, among others, present the meeting.
