Writer and blogger Avijit Roy was hacked to death and his wife injured in a criminal attack near the TSC at Dhaka University (DU) on Thursday night.
A case has been filed with Shahbagh thana in this connection.
Police and witnesses said, Avijit and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya came under attack by the
miscreants at 9:30pm on Thursday while having tea at a tea stall
near TSC after visiting the Ekushey Book Fair.
The criminals stabbed Avijit Roy, 40, indiscriminately with machetes, leaving him seriously injured. The attackers also hacked Banya, 32, as she came for her husband's rescue.
Local people rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where Avijit died around 10:20pm. He was the son of Ajoy Roy, a former professor of physics Department at Dhaka University.
Rafida Afrin Banya was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Prof Ajoy Roy filed a case with Shahbagh police station against some unnamed people on Friday morning.
Police could not confirm the reason behind the attack.
Family members said the expatriate couple has been living in the USA. Avijit alongwith wife Rafida returned home a few days back on the occasion of publishing his two books at the Ekushey Book Fair.
