Launch capsize in Padma kills 12, many still missing

Manikganj : At least 12 people including two children were killed and many remained missing as a launch capsized in the River Padma after being hit by a cargo vessel on Sunday.

One of the dead children was identified as Shetu, six-month-old daughter of Faruk Hossain of Goalanda.

Manikganj Superintendent of Police Bidhan Tripura confirmed that among the dead, four are female, six male and two children.

Launch ‘MV Mostafa’ with about 200 passengers on board capsized in the mid river at about 11:45am as a fertilizer-laden cargo ‘Nargis-1’, hit it while heading towards Daulatdia ferry ghat from Paturia, said Paturia river police outpost in-charge Abdul Muktadir.

After the accident, Fire Brigade and Civil Defence divers rushed to the scene, and with the help of local people rescued 45 passengers. The child was also rescued from the sunken launch. She died on way to hospital.

Some passengers managed to swim ashore while many are still missing. 

Meanwhile, Rajbari district administration has opened a control room for receiving information about the missing persons.

Rajbari DC M Rafiqul Islam and Superintendent of Police Taptun Nasrin rushed to the scene.
