A 48-hour hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, is underway on Wednesday demanding a election under a non-party administration and protesting government's repressive acts.
On Tuesday, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed in a statement announced the extension of the shutdown programme.
The shutdown began at 6am on Tuesday and will end at 6am Friday.
Presence of motorised vehicles was almost normal on the capital streets.
Earlier, the BNP-led 20-party alliance on Friday called a fresh 72-hour nationwide hartal from 6am on Sunday protesting government's repressive acts and growing incidents of extrajudicial killings'.
