Rajshahi Jamaat leader killed in 'gunfight' with DB

Rajshahi: A Jamaat-e-Islami leader was killed during a 'gunfight' with Detective Branch of police of the district town early Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam, 45, ward no:30 Jamaat unit secretary and a teacher of Islamia Degree College.

He was also the owner of Padma Printing Press in Rajshahi.

The family members of the victim alleged that Nurul was picked up by DB police from his press last night.

Till midnight, DB confirmed them that he was in their custody.

Rajshahi DB police assistant commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam said, they conducted a drive with Nurul at Nalkhola Ashraf intersection around 2am. Then a gunfight took place between Jamaat-Shibir activists and the policemen.

"Nurul was caught in the line of fire," police said.

Rajshahi Medical College Hospital police camp in-charge SI Badiuzzaman said, bullet-hit Nurul was brought to hospital in an unconscious condition around 4am.

Later, the victim's family members found Nurul's body at RMCH.
