Narsingdi: Observing that the BNP chairperson herself made a blunder through boycotting the January-5 election, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam asked Khaleda Zia to be realistic.

“Awami League didn’t obstruct you from participating in the polls. Instead, we had urged you to take part in the polls. But, you unleashed anarchy across the country to foil the polls,” he said.

Syed Ashraful, also LGRD and Cooperatives Minister, was addressing the triennial conference of the district Awami League at Mosleh Uddin Bhuiyan Stadium.

Urging Khaleda Zia to prepare for the next polls, the ruling party leader said, “Be realistic. Take part in the election. We’ll have no objection if the country’s people vote you to power.”

Turning to the BNP’s claim of the telephone conversation between its chairperson and Indian BJP president Amit Shah and the forgery of the statement of six US Congressmen, Syed Ashraf said BNP has tarnished the image of Bangladesh abroad through this fraudulence and falsehood.

He also posed a question, “How will those who can resort to such deception lead the country?”

Describing Awami League as not only a political party but also as a family, the Awami League general secretary said it never assumed power through any coup or conspiracy. “Although General Zia and later General HM Ershad usurped the state power through coup and conspiracy, Awami League never assumed power through any plot as it does not believe in such activities.”

Awami League organising secretary Ahammad Hossain, office secretary Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan and women affairs secretary Fazilatun Nesa Indira MP, among others, spoke at the conference with district unit AL president Advocate Asaduzzaman in the chair.
