Rangpur: Hur -e-Jannat Athena, 14, contestant of Channel i Best Dancer Competition, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Peerganj upazila here on Wednesday afternoon.

Athena was an SSC examinee from Adarsha Bahumukhi High School.

After the incident, thousands of enthusiastic people, including students and teachers, rushed in the house of Athena, located at Jaamtola Road in the upazila, to have a glimpse.
 
Athena had been staying in Peerganj for last 12 years with her mother Masharia Sultana Lovely and younger sister Olive.

Her father Alamgir Hossain is an employee of BRAC in Barapukuria of Dinajpur.

Police said Athena’s mother found the doors and windows of the house closed after returning home around 11:00am with daughter Olive. She called her daughter several times but did not get any response.

After breaking the door, she found her hanging from the ceiling fan.

The reason behind the suicide could not be known immediately.
 
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ziaul Islam and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Peerganj thana Israil Hossain visited the spot.
