New Delhi: Indian President Pranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha will contest in Delhi Assembly election from Grater Koilash constituencies as congress candidate.
Most of Bengali people live in this constituency. Election commission of India on Monday announced the Delhi Assembly polls on February 7.
An alumna of St Stephen's College, Sharmistha is a trained Kathak dancer. Her brother Abhijit is a Lok Sabha member from Jangipur in West Bengal. She served as an official hostess of President of India for last two years.
Sharmistha has joined Indian National Congress in June, 2014. Since then she has been actively participating in rallies organized by the party and working at the grass root level with the party workers in her area. Her philosophy is to remain connected, whether to her audience in a proscenium theatre, or to the greater mass of people in her constituency.
Meanwhile, The Congress Election Committee (CEC) met on Monday and cleared the names of party candidates for all Assembly seats in Delhi barring "seven crucial constituencies", including New Delhi, Shalimar Bagh and Seemapuri. Congress president Sonia Gandhi was also present in the meeting.
Sources said the party is likely to announce the candidates for 39 Assembly segments today.
The Congress has already announced its first list of 24 candidates last month for the 70-member Delhi Assembly.
It was at the same meeting that AICC general secretary and former minister Ajay Maken was declared in-charge of the party's Campaign Committee, sources said.
