JESSORE, Jan 10: Goods worth more than one crore taka was burnt in a devastating fire at Loan Office Para of the district town in the wee hours of Saturday.
Locals said one Harun-ur-Rashid rented the house of Afla Tun beside Sommiloni School and has been using it as a godown after the name of 'New Jamuna Transport'. In the godown, he stored bails of old warm clothes, tires of bus and truck, mobil, greases, lubricant and other flammable objects. So he did not electrify the godown to prevent fire. But, on Saturday at about 12am seeing a fire in the godown, Harun informed Sadar police camp and police station.
Later, three fire-fighting units from Jessore, Jhikargachha, and Monirampur led by Deputy Director of Jessore Fire Service and Civil Defence Porimol Chandra Kundu doused the fire.
Manager of New Jamuna Transport Rezaul Karim said someone might have set the godown with fire following enmity.
On the other hand, due to the fire, residents at this densely populated area got panicked and took shelter in safer places.
In-Charge of Sadar police camp TSI Rofiqul Islam said, "We have been helping the fire fighters in their attempts to douse fire."
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jessore Kotwali Model police station Inamul Haque said if any clue of enmity is found behind the incident, police would take action following investigation.
