Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, who was arrested on December 30, 2014 in connection with his alleged involvement with former Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case, was suspended from his post.
The Local Government Division on Wednesday issued an order suspending the mayor from the date of his arrest.
LGD’s Joint Secretary Parimal Kumar Dev told the Daily Observer on Wednesday that the government has decided to suspend Arif as application of his mayor’s power would not be considered as logical and on for the public interest.
Earlier on December 30, a district court has sent Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury to jail in the case.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Rokeya Aktar passed the order, rejecting the bail plea of the city mayor.
The Sylhet mayor surrendered before the court and sought bail at the same day.
On November 13, the police submitted a supplementary charge sheet against 35 people including 11 new in Kibria murder case. The freshly-indicted accused included Arif and Habiganj Mayor GK Gaus as well Harris Chowdhury, a former political adviser to Khaleda Zia.
On January 27, 2005, five people including Kibria were killed in a grenade attack after attending a rally in Boidyer Bazar of Habiganj.
BNP-backed candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury, also President of Sylhet City BNP, was elected Mayor in Sylhet City Corporation election held On Jun 15, 2013.
He had polled 107,330 votes while his closest contender outgoing Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran had drawn 72,173 from all the 128 centres of the city corporation.
