40 houses, shops burnt in Bagerhat

BAGERHAT, Dec 31: At least 40 shops and houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Chitolmari upazila bazaar in the district on Tuesday night. However, three people -- Titu Sarder, Abdur Rob, and Sona Mia were injured during their attempt to douse the fire.
Chitolmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Didarul Alam said they prepared a list of 36 victims affected in the fire. A three-member committee was formed to investigate  the incident, he added.
Witnesses said the fire originated from a petrol shop on Tuesday at about 7:45pm and soon engulfed 25 other shops including pharmacy, mobile servicing centre, stationary, pesticide, and sweetmeat. On information, three fire-fighting units from Bagerhat, Tungipara and Nazirpur rushed to the spot and doused the fire at about 9pm on the same day.
The fire damaged goods worth about 7-8 crore taka, the traders informed.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chitolmari police station Dilip Kumar Sarker confirmed the incident.
