Dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami, is underway on Wednesday in protest against the death penalty for its leader ATM Azharul Islam for committing crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
The shutdown began at 6am and it will continue till 5:30pm on Thursday.
In Mirpur, the activists of Jamaat-Shibir brought out a procession in support of hartal in the morning and they vandalised two vehicles.
On the other hand, pickets vandalised a covered van and later set fire to it at Jatrabari area around 6:30am. On information, Fire Service men able to extinguished the blaze.
Additional police have been deployed at the key point of the city.
Jamaat acting ameer Moqbul Ahmad made the announcement through a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
The International Crime Tribunal-1 on Tuesday awarded death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general ATM Azharul Islam for his alleged crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
