In the wake of ruling party's student body Bangladesh Chhatra League's threat to resist 20-party's rally in Gazipur, BNP on Wednesday announced to hold the programme at any cost.
"We've already got permission from the local authorities for holding a rally at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College on December 27. The government with its cadres is trying to foil our programme. We want to say we'll stage the rally as per our schedule, no matter what," said BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
At a press briefing at BNP's Nayapaltan central office in the capital, he said the ruling party men with the help of law enforcers swooped on the rally venue around 9:10pm on Tuesday and damaged their posters, banners and festoons, and assaulted the 20-party men.
He said they think the attack was made at the behest of the Prime Minister who visited the district on Tuesday.
Fakhrul said a group of Jubo League activists also attacked a procession of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists on Wednesday in front of the rally venue, where BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was scheduled to address the programme.
He alleged that the local superintendent of police at the local Press Club announced on Wednesday that they will not allow Khaleda to address the programme.
Mentioning that their rally in Gazipur to be peaceful and democratic one, he said, "We earlier held such programmes peacefully at different parts of the country. The government now deliberately tries to foil it resorting to various tactics."
He said they will hold the rally braving all the obstacles and undemocratic attitude by the government.
Meanwhile, Gazipur district unit BNP at a press briefing at the party' s district office also announced to hold the rally on December 27 foiling all barriers to it.
Addressing the press briefing, BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah said they will peacefully arrange the rally.
He hoped that the ruling party and the local administration will cooperate with them in holding the programme upholding the old tradition of politics in Gazipur.    ?UNB
