BGB reestablished its fame : PM

Praising Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) jawans for their role, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said, "BGB has reestablished its fame."

"Various changes are being brought in the paramilitary force to turn it into a modern and powerful one. BGB jawans are playing a courageous role to protect borders and to maintain the country’s law and order," the premier said.

She said while addressing a programme at the BGB’s Peelkhana headquarters in the capital in the morning on the occasion of BGB Day .

Earlier, the Prime Minister was received by State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan and BGB Director General Major General Aziz Ahmed on her arrival at the parade ground.

UNB adds : "You resisted with an iron hand the evil plot of BNP-Jamaat-Shibir to create anarchy in the country aiming to foil the 10th general election," she said.

PM said one BGB nayek subedar and two BGB sepoys sacrificed their lives while performing their duties.

The prime minister the BGB members performed their duties successfully by reconstructing the houses, shops and religious establishments of people across the country that were destructed by the BNP-Jamaat-Shibir men at that time.

"You ensured their (people) security, too," she said thanking the BGB personnel for their outstanding performance.

The Prime Minister sought BGB’s cooperation in her government’s efforts to make Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021 and a developed nation by 2041 and build a dignified nation before the world comity.

She expressed her optimism that the BGB members would continue performing their duties and responsibilities with patriotism and honesty upholding the image and dignity of the force.

Mentioning the glorious history with rich tradition and successful military expeditions of the organisation, the Prime Minister said this force had first developed resistance against the Pakistani occupation forces during the War of Liberation.

The EPR wireless operators sent Bangabandhu’s proclamation of independence across the country from Peelkhana, she said adding that the occupation forces killed Major Showkat Ali for sending the proclamation message through the EPR wireless.

Hasina termed Bir Sreshtha Lance Nayek Noor Mohammad and Bir Sreshtha Lance Nayek Munshi Abdur Rauf the symbols of heroes and said eight Bir Uttam, 32 Bir Bikram and 77 Bir Pratik also glorified the history of the nation through their heroic role and achievements.

Praising the BGB members for their role in protecting the country's frontier, she said, the force deployed along the country's border areas has efficiently been performing their duties and responsibilities assisting the civil administration in tackling natural disasters, accidents and emergency situation.

Recalling the 2009 tragic Peelkhana incident that claimed 74 fresh lives, including 57 Army officers, the Prime Minister said some disgruntled members of the then BDR had carried out the barbaric massacre.

She said the government showing highest patience faced the ill-attempt of the conspirators, controlled the situation and completed the trial by bringing the perpetrators to justice brightening the nation’s image.

After the Peelkhana incident, the Prime Minister said, the government has taken various effective reform programmes to ensure discipline, and develop the BGB as a modern and time befitting force.

In this regard, she mentioned the enactment of Boarder Guard Bangladesh Act 2010, decentralisation of its command by setting up four new sectors and four region headquarters under a new organisational structure to make it more effective and dynamic force.

Besides, construction of the proposed a 935-km road across Bangladesh and India border and 285-km one across Bangladesh and Myanmar borders to make further effective and strengthen BGB’s monitoring of land boundary is under active consideration of the government, she said.

The Prime Minister, in her speech, also described various steps for the welfare and development of the force and its members.

Earlier, the Prime Minister attended the parade of the Members of the uniformed forces of the BGB and took salute.  She also inspected the parade riding an open Jeep.

BGB Deputy Director General and Parade Commander Akhter Hamid Khan conducted the parade.

Sheikh Hasina also handed over President Border Guard Padak-2014 among 10 BGB members and Border Guard Bangladesh Padak-2014 among 20 as well as President Border Guard (Sheba) Padak-2014 among 10 and Border Guard Bangladesh (Sheba) Padak-2014 among 20 BGB members for their heroic contributions.
