The Department of Environment (DoE) has slapped a fine of Tk 500,000 on the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).
DoE's Chittagong Divisional acting Director Md Shahidul Alam said that the department's Director (enforcement) Md Alamgir Hossain imposed the fine on Monday.
A CCC representative was present at the time of hearing in Dhaka.
The fine was imposed because parts of a hill in Chittagong's Tiger Pass area were levelled without the DoE's approval to construct a house for Mayor Monjur Alam at a cost of Tk 52 million.
Earlier, the DoE had served a notice on the CCC in this connection.
The hill, owned by the railways, was bought by the city corporation in an auction last year to build a bungalow for the mayor.
The High Court ordered suspension of the construction work for a week following a a petition by an organisation.
On June 4, the Appellate Division scrapped the plea after directing the CCC to secure permission from 'concerned authorities' including the DoE to construct the bungalow.
Later the CCC sought DoE permission.
The court was moved again on Dec 4 once the CCC resumed construction work without the DoE's approval. ?bdnews24.com
