Rajshahi: Three female college students were killed and 30 other people were injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Katakhali in the city on Sunday.
The dead were identified as Mahmuda Haque Tania, 20, Sharmin Akhter, 21, and Seema, 21. They all were the students of Rajshahi College.
Fellow students only confirmed their names. But, other details could not be known immediately.
Of the injured, 12 female students have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Condition of two students was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
Police, quoting witnesses, said the Puthia-bound college bus collided head on with a speeding passenger bus from Sirajganj near Rajshahi Jute Mills at about 1pm.
After the collision, the college bus fell into a roadside ditch, leaving 33 passengers including students injured.
On information, firefighting units of Sadar Fire Service first rescued the critically injured and sent them to RMCH, said an official of the Fire Service.
The three students were declared dead at the hospital at about 1:45pm, confirmed RMCH Director Brig Gen AKM Nasiruddin.
College principal Habibur Rahman rushed to the RMCH after hearing the incident and inquired about the treatment of the injured students. He also condoled the deaths of his three students.
Meanwhile, the college authority, suspended all classes and scheduled examinations for Monday.
