Malaysia to build low-cost flats at Kamrangirchar

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Malaysia has shown interest in construction of low-cost flats under housing projects at Kamrangirchar to provide flats to the poor at an affordable cost.

Special Envoy of the Malaysian PM on Southeast Asian Affairs, Seri Samy Vellu, showed the interest as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested him to construct such flats for low-income group of people in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Premier made the request when the envoy made a courtesy call on her at her hotel suite here Tuesday evening. She arrived in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday on a three-day visit.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said they discussed various matters relating to investment in Bangladesh, particularly in large-scale housing projects and infrastructure development.

Three issues came up in the discussion between the Prime Minister and the envoy, he said. The issues are: construction of housing for low-income people at Kamrangirchar in Dhaka, construction of a crude oil terminal at Single Mooring in Chittagong and import of rail coaches from Malaysia.

The Prime Minister requested the envoy mainly for constructing a number of multi-storey buildings for low-income people at Kamrangirchar.

Sami Vellu showed interest in this proposal of Bangladesh, the foreign secretary said, adding the poor people will get flats from these projects at an affordable cost.

The Malaysian envoy expressed desire for construction of a crude oil handling terminal at Single Mooring in Chittagong Port area.

The foreign secretary said Sami Vellu has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister for selling 400 railway coaches to Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali, Senior Secretary of PM's Office Abul Kalam Azad and Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri were present.
