A Road Accident Memorial was unveiled on Saturday in memory of noted filmmaker Tareque Masud and media personality Mishuk Munier who lost their lives in a tragic road mishap August 13, 2011.

White painted wrecked body of a microbus with registration number Dhaka Cha 13-0302 is a part of the memorial that is placed in front of Shamsunnahar Hall near Teacher Student Centre (TSC) of the Dhaka University.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Professor AAMS Arefins Siddique, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, said that it was an unexpected and undesirable death of Tareque and Mishuk in the accident. The sculpture has been designed to create mass awareness.

The VC urged the DU students as well as general people to be more cautions on traffic rules and regulations that would help to reduce the road accidents in the country.

Film star and Nirapad Sarak Chai chairman Ilyas Kanchan said not only the drivers but also all people of the country are responsible for road accidents.

Tareque Masud Memorial Trust chairperson Catherine Masud said the memorial has been structured in the shape of the crumpled car in which Tareque, Mishuk and three of their team lost their lives in a road accident on August 13, 2011.

Expressing grief, Munjoli Kazi, wife of Mishuk Munier, held vehicle owners responsible rather than drivers for accidents.

She requested the owners to appoint skilled and efficient drivers through legal processes.

Tareque Masud Memorial Trust, in association with BRAC Bank, established the sculpture to raise awareness about road safety issues. The designer of the memorial is sculpture Dhali Al Mamun and engineer Salauddin Ahmad.

Among others, cultural personality Nasir Uddin Yusuf Bacchu and noted journalist Munni Saha, were present.
