PM for transit thru' India for links with Bhutan, Nepal

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday stressed the importance of transit through India for establishing connectivity with Bhutan and Nepal to further enhance trade and business among South Asian countries.

The Prime Minister said this when visiting Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Indian External Affairs Dr Shashi Tharoor met her at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office in the evening.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhuri said they discussed issues relating to bilateral interests.

Hasina said necessary infrastructures on Bangladesh side have already been completed for establishing connectivity with Nepal and Bhutan.

The infrastructures are also ready on Bhutan and Nepal sides for the connectivity, Hasina said adding that these three countries now need transit through India to boost trade and business.

In reply, the Indian Member of Parliament said Bangladesh should get transit through India.

Terming the poverty the main and common enemy of the region, the Prime Minister said the nations of the region should work together to root out poverty.

During the meeting, Dr Shashi Tharoor stressed the need for joint water and Hydro-electricity management as Bangladesh, India, Bhutan and Nepal have common rivers.

Highly appreciating visionary and dynamic leadership of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, the Indian Lok Shaba member said Hasina is taking Bangladesh ahead with the spirit of the War of Liberation.

In this connection, Shashi Tharoor mentioned that the Indian Lok Shobha and Rajya Shaba highly praised Sheikh Hasina for her role in containing terrorism in the region.

Later, President of PEN International and renowned Canadian writer John Ralston Saul also called on the Prime Minister at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban Office.
