RAJSHAHI, Nov 18: Contradictory statements by the detective personnel and the local police about the detention of a female student from the residence of the slain teacher of Rajshahi University have led to a mystery.
After the murder of Prof AKM Shafiul Islam, the police sources said that the female student had been detained by the Detective Branch of Police from his home. The door was locked from outside.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Motihar Police Station, Alamgir Hossain, told this correspondent that DB personnel had entered the home breaking open the door. But they did not disclose the information at that time, he claimed.
Contradicting the OC's claim, DB Police officer Abdul Mazid said that they did not detain the girl from the teacher's house. He refuted the claim of the OC that she was undergoing interrogation at DB office in the city.
The female student, identified as Sonamoni, hails from Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha district.
Sources in the DB said that she was providing valuable information regarding the murder. For the sake of investigation the information about her detention from Prof Shafiul's home was not disclosed, they claimed.
Neighbours and police sources said that the girl had entered the teacher's home a day before the murder and did not come out until the DB police detained her.
Meanwhile, students and teachers of the university continued their demonstration on the campus for the third consecutive day protesting against the murder of the teacher.
Teachers and students of the Sociology Department formed a human chain at the Paris Road on the campus on Tuesday, demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers.
Expressing solidarity, RU Teachers Association (RUTA) and RU Kendrio Sangskritik Jote (Central Cultural Alliance) joined the human chain.
They brought out a protest procession that paraded through various points on the campus.
Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan spoke at the human chain programme.
Meanwhile, scheduled classes and examinations were not held on Tuesday as part of the ongoing boycott by the RUTA, protesting the killing.
However, admission process for the 2014-2015 academic session continued normally under a decision of the RUTA, said General Secretary of the association Prof Pronab Kumar Punday.
The RUTA will form a human chain at Zero-point of Saheb Bazaar area in the city on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
