RAJSHAHI, Nov 15: Unidentified criminals stabbed to death a sociology teacher of Rajshahi University (RU) near his house adjacent to the campus on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased teacher was identified as Prof AKM Shafiul Islam. He was from Sonatola upazila of Bogra.
Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station told The Daily Observer on Saturday that a gang of miscreants severely stabbed him with machetes at the entrance of Bihas residential area around 3:40pm, leaving him critically injured.
Witnesses said several youths assaulted the sociology teacher with sharp weapons in front of Bihashpalli when he was returning home. He sustained severe injuries on his head and shoulder.
Shafiul later started for a hospital on a rickshaw but fell down when it approached Binodpur near the campus. Bystanders rushed him to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).
"He died as soon as he was taken to the operation theatre around 4pm," Dr Mamtaz told The Daily Observer.
The motive behind the attack could not be known immediately. Motihar Police Station OC Alamgir Hossain said they were trying to identify and arrest the assailants.
However, police primarily suspected any extremists group may be involved in the killing of Shafiul.
Enraged by the incident, teachers and students put barricade on Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway in the evening in front of the university and staged demonstration demanding arrest of the killers and exemplary punishment. Around hundred agitating students of Rajshahi University (RU) took part in the demonstration and blockade programme.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA) announced to boycott all classes and examinations of the university on Sunday protesting the murder and demanding immediate arrest of the killers.
Prof Pranab Kumar Pandey, Secretary of RUTA, made the announcement after an emergency meeting. Talking to our RU correspondent, he said they will declare their next course of actions Sunday.
Additional police forces including Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have been deployed on the RU campus.
Police units in the RU and elsewhere have been instructed to stay alert so that law and order does not go out of control, said an official at Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) source said.
In 2006, RU Geology teacher S Taher was murdered at his home on the campus. A court sentenced Taher's colleague Mia Md Mohiuddin, caretaker Jahangir Alam, and two others -- Abdus Salam and Najmul -- to death over the killing.
The High Court later commuted death sentences of Salam and Najmul but upheld maximum penalty for Mohiuddin and Alam.
