Miscreants hacked a Rajshahi University teacher to death in Chouddapai area near the varsity on Saturday.

The dead was identified as Dr AKM Shafiul Islam, a professor of Sociology Department. He hailed from Sonatola upazila of Bogra district.

 RU Pro-Vice Chancellor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan said Shafiul came under attack at about 3pm while returning his University Housing Society residence from his workplace by a motorcycle.

The miscreants hacked Shafiul severely, leaving him critically injured.

The teacher was rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at about 4:30pm.

A hospital source said Shafiul received injuries on his head and neck by sharp weapons. "He was taken to the operation theater for emergency surgery because of his critical condition. But he died at the operation theater," the source said.

Motihar thana OC Alamgir Hossain confirmed the incident.

Police hunt is on to arrest the culprits, he added.

Denouncing the killing,  RU Vice Chancellor M Mizanuddin said the killers must be hunted down and meted out punishment.

Meanwhile, students of the Sociology Department blockade the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway at 6:30pm protesting the murder

On the other hand, the Rajshahi University Teachers Association (Ruta) announced to boycott all classes and examinations on Sunday protesting the killing and demanding arrest of the attackers.
