Architect of Nat'l Memorial Mainul Hossain passes away

Syed Mainul Hossain, architect of the National Memorial, died of brain stroke on Monday afternoon at a hospital in the capital. He was 62.

Syed Mainul Hossai was rushed to the emergency unit at Suhrawardy Hospital in the capital where he passed away at about 3pm.

His design proposal for National Memorial was selected among 57 submissions in a nationwide design competition held in June 1978.

Following the evaluation of the submissions, his design was chosen. The main structure and the artificial lake and other facilities were completed in 1982. It was inaugurated on December 16, 1982.

Syed Mainul Hossain was born on May 5, 1952 at village Dampara under Tungibari in Munshiganj district. His father Mujibul Huq was a teacher of History at Rajendra College in Faridpur. Mainul wanted to study engineering in his boyhood.

At that time (1969), a mass upsurge was taking place in Dhaka and he was sent to Dhaka from Faridpur. In 1970, he got admitted to the Department of Architecture of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.  

National Memorial is the national monument of Bangladesh. It was built in the memory of the valour and the sacrifice of all those who laid down their lives in the Liberation War of 1971, which brought independence and separated Bangladesh from Pakistan.
